About CarmoCoffees: Terroir and Tradition

Established in 2007, Carmo Coffees is driven by a singular mission: to push the boundaries of the Brazilian coffee industry and deliver the most exclusive experiences to coffee lovers worldwide. Across their estates—ranging from century-old heritage sites to modern farms—the culture remains consistent: a deep respect for traditions passed down through generations, seamlessly integrated with the industry’s most advanced innovations. This dedication to experimentation and meticulous care has earned their partner producers a prestigious collection of national and international awards over the past two decades.

The tradition of specialty coffee in Carmo de Minas, situated at altitudes between 1,000 and 1,200 meters, is defined by more than just numbers; it is rooted in world-class quality and excellence. The mountain altitude, combined with a climate of warm, rainy summers and the dry, mild winters typical of southern Minas Gerais, creates the perfect conditions for cultivating some of the finest beans in the country.

Innovation and Sustainability

Since its inception, Carmo Coffees has been a strategic pioneer. The group played a pivotal role in transforming the regional market in the early 2000s, moving away from the then-dominant commodity model toward high-value specialty coffee. By championing advanced post-harvest processes and planting varieties specifically selected for their cupping performance, they have elevated the global perception of Brazilian specialty coffee.

For Carmo Coffees, coffee and nature are inextricably linked. The company prioritizes sustainable cultivation and environmental stewardship, exemplified by the photovoltaic plant located at their Três Corações warehouse. This facility allows producers to harness renewable energy, aligning their operations with modern sustainability policies. Furthermore, in partnership with EISA and Nespresso, Carmo Coffees is currently leading a reforestation project in environmental preservation areas, planting 3,000 native tree saplings.

Social Impact and Community

Aligned with their conscious business model, Carmo Coffees actively participates in various social initiatives. Through a partnership with the Amigos do Meio Ambiente (Friends of the Environment) cooperative, all recyclable materials from their local offices are donated to the organization, accompanied by a financial contribution for every kilogram of waste exported.

Another standout initiative is the BEE SMS project, also in collaboration with EISA and Nespresso. This program provides selected coffee producers with beehives, specialized training, protective equipment, and honey-processing machinery. The goal is to boost crop productivity across Southern Minas through the power of natural pollination, creating a thriving, bio-diverse agricultural ecosystem.

Meet the Producer: Luiz Paulo Pereira, IP Farm

IP’s journey began in 1967 when Isidro Pereira, father of Luiz Paulo, acquired the land. Five years later, Luiz joined him to manage the farm, combining tradition with a new vision for growth. In 1974, Luiz Paulo launched an ambitious expansion plan, increasing the planted area by more than 500%. Later, he introduced new coffee processing techniques and specialty coffee production with the acquisition of his first de-pulping machine.

IP Farm values excellence. Employees involved in post-harvest tasks receive bonuses for lots scoring above 80 points, and guidance to continuously improve. Conversely, poor results, such as defective fermentation, trigger deductions, reinforcing the farm’s unwavering commitment to quality.

At IP, they currently process coffees using a variety of sophisticated methods:

  • Natural & Pulped Natural

  • Honey Process

  • Anaerobic Fermentation: Conducted in sealed barrels.

  • Aerobic Fermentation: Conducted in open tanks.

To support the growing demand for precision, the farm has recently expanded its infrastructure, adding 2,000 square meters of drying patios, a new rotary dryer, and three additional bins. All employees are undergoing continuous training and are actively involved in these advanced processes, strengthening the farm’s dedication to both quality and technical evolution.
